I'm always surprised at how little people actually do this. Most people just buy a TV, get it home from the store, and never really change anything. I've tinkered with the settings from time to time, but I finally downloaded the AVS HD 709 calibration screens and took the time to calibrate my TV. And holy bajeezus, what a change. Games look so much better.

Oh and a few quick tips in general for those of you not willing to calibrate your TV completely: -Turn sharpness down to '0' or 'Min'. Get rid of it. -Turn the color setting to 'Warm'. Most movies and games use this as a base. -Turn the TV mode to 'Cinema'.

You download the files onto either an MP4 file to play on a 360 or something, or you can download one of the other versions and burn those files to a DVD. Pop the DVD into a player, or maybe the PS3 or something, and you'll be able to choose different screens. Each screen has to do with a different aspect of the calibration. One screen is for contrast, another for brightness, etc., etc., until every setting is calibrated. It'll take some time to go through everything, but you won't regret it when you do.

You have contrast, brightness, color, hue, TV mode (dynamic, normal, cinema, etc.), color mode (cool, normal, warm, etc.), and then you have the advanced settings like the White Balance, which involves RGB-gain and RGB-bias. It's very simple though. For example, the 'brightness' section of the files has a black background with.I think 25 numbers going left to right along the screen. At each of the numbers is a blinking white segment rectangle. All you have to do is change the brightness until a certain number of those blocks blinks. I believe they want all blocks after 17 blinking if I remember correctly.

The other 16 shouldn't be visible. The 'contrast' screen is exactly the opposite, with black blinking blocks on a white background, etc., etc.

There are a lot of settings in the Xbox settings and TV settings that need to be correct for your TV, and although Xbox includes some calibration I found the AVSHD 709 disc to be the best way to ensure consistency across devices: Xbox One, PS3, Bluray player, Xbox 360 (disc version not compatible with the 360, but you can download the video files necessary from the link).
